PURGATORY - 19

Installation - Purgatory-19

Trapped, my Student Installation is an exploration of COVID emotions. What anxieties & feelings did I experience during quarantine?
How can I create works of art that investigate COVID struggles & invite others to collaborate by sharing and co-creating emotions. As a release, I expressed myself by experimenting with found objects: computer, license plates, tv, satellite, & masks. By manipulating the surfaces, I conveyed the complex layers of my emotions through practicing painting, transforming, & assembling.
I was able to develop a language that synthesized the complex issues surrounding COVID lockdown. 1-6 Juxtaposing the TV & satellite with video clips of news & personal international interviews, I was able to invite people to bring their COVID experience to my work. Propelled by my inquiry I revisited masks as a means of self expression through personal COVID emojis.
Inviting others to select & print their own emotions on masks. I discovered print-making mirrors COVID’s reproduction process. Purgatory-19, my site specific installation allowed me to synthesize my found object materials, individual co-created processes and COVID ideas about expressing emotions into a participatory art experience.
